Technical Description:
CS650 contains two 30 cm long stainless steel probes connected to a printed circuit board. The circuit board is encapsulated with epoxy resin, and the shielded cable attached to the circuit board provides connection with the data collector.
CS650 measures transmission time, signal attenuation, and temperature; Further analyze these raw measurement values to obtain the dielectric constant, volumetric water content, and volumetric conductivity.
The measured signal attenuation is used to correct the loss effect and propagation time in reflection detection. Loss effect correction allows the probe to measure high-precision volumetric moisture content in soil with a volumetric conductivity of ≤ 3 dS m-1, without the need for specific soil calibration.
Soil bulk conductivity can also be calculated from attenuation measurements. A thermistor in thermal contact with the probe near the surface of the epoxy resin is used to measure temperature. If the sensor is installed horizontally, accurate temperature measurement at the same depth as soil moisture content measurement can be obtained. If sensors are installed in other orientations, temperature measurement can only represent the area near the epoxy resin probe.
