Technical Description:
CS655 consists of two 12 centimeter long stainless steel rods connected to a printed circuit board. The circuit board is encapsulated in epoxy resin and shielded cables are connected to the circuit board for data logger connection.
CS655 measures signal propagation time, signal attenuation, and temperature. Then derive the dielectric constant, volumetric water content, and volumetric conductivity from these raw values. The measured signal attenuation is used to correct the losses in reflection detection and propagation time measurement
effect. This loss effect correction allows for accurate measurement of moisture content in soil with a volume EC ≤ 8ds m-1, without the need for soil specific calibration.
The volumetric conductivity of the soil was calculated through attenuation measurement. Thermistors are in thermal contact with probe rods near the surface of epoxy resin to measure temperature. The horizontally installed sensors provide accurate soil temperature for calculating and measuring soil water content at the same depth. If installed in other directions, the measured temperature is the temperature near the entrance of the rod entering the epoxy area.
