A beam of primary X-rays is emitted from the tested sample, and the atoms of the sample absorb the energy of the X-rays and are excited, releasing secondary X-rays. Each chemical element releases X-rays of specific energy. By measuring the characteristic energy and intensity of these released secondary X-rays, the X-ray analyzer can provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of the coating thickness and composition of the tested material.
