Principles and processes of wastewater treatment in the food industry


In food wastewater treatment, there is a large amount of organic matter and oxygen consumption is a characteristic of organic wastewater. Therefore, biochemical methods are often used for the treatment of organic wastewater. The organic matter discharged from food industry wastewater into water bodies undergoes aerobic decomposition into inorganic substances under the condition of aerobic bacteria and sufficient oxygen supply. This decomposition process is called biological oxidation. The essence of aerobic biological treatment is to use artificial measures to cultivate microorganisms in water and inject sufficient oxygen to promote the biochemical decomposition process of organic matter. The biological aerobic treatment of organic wastewater has the following advantages: fast biochemical reaction speed, simple aerobic digestion equipment, low infrastructure investment, stable operation and simple operation. Aerobic treatment is generally suitable for treating medium to low concentration organic wastewater.

The aerobic biological treatment methods for organic wastewater mainly include activated sludge method, biofilm method, aeration pond method, and membrane bioreactor method.

Food industry wastewater treatment: 1. Activated sludge process: The general process of ordinary activated sludge process is that the wastewater first passes through the primary sedimentation tank, and some suspended particles are removed in advance to reduce the workload of activated sludge. After the BOD is reduced to a certain degree, the treated wastewater and some activated sludge flow into another container, namely the secondary sedimentation tank. The clean water after removing the activated sludge can be discharged. Due to the continuous removal of sludge from the aeration tank, a portion of the sludge needs to be returned to the aeration tank to maintain the concentration of activated sludge in the tank. 2. Biochemical treatment is one of the most important processes in organic wastewater treatment systems. In the wastewater treatment of the food industry, biological treatment processes can be divided into aerobic processes, anaerobic processes, stabilization ponds, land treatment, and various combination processes formed by the combination of the above processes. Food wastewater is organic wastewater, and biological treatment is the main secondary treatment process aimed at degrading COD BOD5。

3. Membrane bioreactor method: The membrane bioreactor completes the biochemical and physicochemical treatment of wastewater in one tank, greatly improving the efficiency of sludge water separation. Due to the increase in activated sludge in the aeration tank and the emergence of specific bacteria in the sludge water, the biochemical reaction rate is also increased. This process can greatly reduce the production of excess sludge, and the treated effluent is clear and transparent purified water, with much better effluent quality than other sewage treatment processes.

The physical treatment methods used for food industry wastewater treatment include screening, skimming, adjustment, precipitation, and air flotation. These five processes are mostly used for pretreatment or primary treatment, while centrifugal separation, filtration, and microfiltration are mainly used for deep treatment.
