The German ERICHSEN PIG 455 paint film thickness gauge uses a standard wedge cutting method to inspect multiple layers of different paint films and to inspect paint layers on any substrate.
PIG 455 is a paint film detection instrument suitable for situations where conventional electromagnetic measurement techniques cannot work. Mainly measuring coatings on wood, concrete, plastic, and other non-metallic substrates.
Test principle: 455 measurement based on standard wedge cutting procedure: The coating is cut to the substrate at a defined angle, and the thickness (s) of the coating is calculated based on the triangular projection (b) of the cutting surface, which is determined by a microscope and cutting angle (а). According to the same principle, the thickness of each layer of the multi-layer coating system can also be calculated. For adhesion testing that complies with AS 1580 Meth 408.1 standard, the width of the rolled up area of the coating during cutting operation is related to the projection b.
PIG 455 consists of one black aluminum oxide component, which includes the following functional elements: replaceable carbide cutting heads with precise angle cutting blades. A 50x measuring microscope and a scale (2mm divided into 100 grids) are also suitable for inspection tasks. Two pairs of legs are used to support the measurement microscope and guide the carbide cutting head. The battery slot can hold 9V batteries, and the LED can better illuminate the sample. The switch is set (lit)
Measurement steps of paint film thickness gauge:
1. Marking: Use a marking pen to make a small colorimetric mark on the surface of the coating being measured.
2. Scratch: Hold the instrument with the blade facing down and the magnifying glass viewing hole facing forward, place the blade not far in front of the mark, and at this time, the two guide bolts and the blade are tightly attached to the surface of the coating. Apply light pressure to keep the blade straight across the mark and make sure that the coating contacts the substrate.
3. Numerical grid: Turn on the light bulb switch next to the magnifying glass sight hole, focus the magnifying glass on the scratch on the mark, adjust the focus knob at the bottom to find the best focal length; Rotate the upper sight glass tube and slightly adjust the position of the instrument so that any long scale line overlaps with the scratch line of the paint mark. Then count the small scale grids from left to right until the second layer of paint or substrate, which is the total number of small grids for a single or multiple layers.
4. Retrieval: Multiply the total number of small cells by the corresponding coefficient according to different models to obtain the total thickness of each single or multiple layers of the coating.
Calibration: The instrument has been calibrated before leaving the factory. After a period of use, to ensure accurate measurement, standard thickness can be used for regular verification
