-Instrument Introduction

The Zeeman effect is a famous experiment in the history of physics. Dutch physicist Zeeman discovered in 1896 that by placing a light source that produces a spectrum in a sufficiently strong magnetic field, the magnetic field acting on the luminescent material causes a change in the spectrum. One spectral line splits into several polarized lines, a phenomenon known as the Zeeman effect. Zeeman effect is another magneto-optical effect discovered after Faraday magneto-optical effect induced optical rotation effect. The discovery of this phenomenon provides strong support for the electromagnetic theory of light, confirming that atoms have magnetic moments and spatial orientation quantization.

This experimental setup is used to study the normal Zeeman effect of the 546.1nm spectral line of a mercury lamp. The magnetic field size of the experimental device can be adjusted to affect the interference ring, and the imaging is received by a CCD camera for analysis and calculation. This experimental equipment is an ideal tool for studying the Zeeman effect.
